. chris, what was that shout out to john mccain and joe lieberman about? that seemed to make john mccain unhappy? >> he did his patented grimace smile. it was a standard cap and trade bill along the framework of what would later be passed by the house of representatives after president and killed in the senate because no republics republicans would support it. john mccain and joe lieberman in three sessions introduced bills to put a cap on carbon and that amount would have gone down year for year. what democrats tried to pass in 2009 and could not get done. it was a reminder to the republicans that there was a remarkable and in my time covering politics, lurch backwards. newt gingrich was haunted by sitting with nancy pelosi endorsing it. john mccain favored cap and trade. all of that has been undone and destroyed as the republican party has put this in this shrinking denial of the political strain. i think the president was trying to point that out and that's why john mccain felt uncomfortable. >> sitting between two democratic senators and wishing he wasn't. he said i am not going to u

think, i think conservatives are going to win just as they did with john mccain on amnesty for illegals, but not if they're too demoralized to call their congressman and write their senators, we're probably not going to like obama's cabinet nominees over the next few years. we still have 2014 and republicans who hold the house and we may pick up the senate. but don't be demoralized republicans, and it's curious how the gun debate started and this time it's different, we're pushing gun control and a few weeks go by and it seems to have kind of petered out. same thing with amnesty. >> sean: and he's a -- he's a pediatric neuro surgeon, and he was the guy that confronted obama over medical savings accounts, the debt, the deficit and i'm watching his speech and then i interviewed him and i'm thinking why don't republicans say what he's saying? because it's common sense. >> right. >> sean: it's appealing. it resonates. >> right, and-- >> why is he saying these things? >> it was magnificent and you say he confronted obama over these things. it wasn't confrontational, it was pure common sense

, and on the senate side, you definitely see some of those were traditional republicans like senator john mccain, snorkeenator kelly ayotte of ne hampshire where we can't make the defense cuts clear. there's a divide, and it's unclear exactly how they're going to bridge the gap there. >> dana, this divide, how dangerous is it for an entire party that's really trying to reinvent itself after the november loss. >> it is a pretty serious one. you see a lot of the green eye shades republicans here in washington aren't listening to the governors. the more popular officials and their party saying, look, it's important to rein in spending. that can't be the sole label for this party. when you have so many washington republicans saying the budget cut is even more important than national defense, there seems to be -- i think we're finally reaching a level where there is some push-back. and so there is a more serious division than had occurred in the past when it was all about budget cutting. >> do you think, lauren, we're going to get a final deal on sequestration, or are they going to kick the can down
